Management of Cytokine Release Syndrome Associated with Chemotherapy Agents

The purpose of this activity is to provide pharmacy technicians and pharmacist with the latest updates in literature regarding newly approved therapies that may cause CRS and the treatment of CRS. The updates in the literature began with recent data published about the management of immunotherapy related toxicities and medication specific trials for new indications. Therapeutic treatment with immunotherapies such as CAR T-cell therapy and BiTE therapy can lead to life threatening or fatal CRS events. Through an extensive literature review, this presentation will summarize the important updates in management of CRS treatment to help pharmacist and pharmacy technicians understand the current therapies.

This activity is intended for Pharmacists and Pharmacy technicians.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity Pharmacist will be able to:

  • Define cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and review its underlying pathophysiology
  • Analyze the mechanism of action of medications that are commonly associated with CRS
  • Describe the current approach to the treatment of CRS

At the completion of this activity Pharmacy technicians will be able to:

  • Discuss the symptoms commonly associated with CRS
  • Identify brand and generic names of the pharmacological agents that are commonly associated with CRS
  • Recognize brand and generic names of the pharmacological agents used in treatment of CRS
