Improving Management of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) with Ease
This activity will provide pharmacists, residents, and pharmacy technicians with information on background, barriers of care, and therapy options for sickle cell disease and its complications. The information provided will aid in determining how to provide safe and efficacious therapy options for patients with sickle cell disease. Problems related to SCD are controlled with hydroxyurea, blood transfusions, and opioids. Even with the mainstays of therapy, patients may experience multiple vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) episodes leading to hospitalizations. Recent therapeutic developments have allowed patients who are unable to tolerate hydroxyurea to have different therapeutic options. These specialty medications include l-glutamine, voxelotor, crizanlizumab, and rivipansel. This CE will examine peer reviewed literature to determine their place in therapy in managing various complications of SCD.
