How Health Systems Can Tackle the Opioid Epidemic

This activity will highlight how a comprehensive opioid stewardship program can improve utilization of opioids, improve multi-modal approaches to pain management, optimize prescribing of opioid and naloxone at discharge and minimize drug diversion. These are all challenges currently confronting our health-systems and the strategies leading to success can be different. The exchange of ideas as the ongoing crisis changes will assist our members in sustain and spreading these programs.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and role of a health-system opioid stewardship governance committee.
  2. Identify key opioid stewardship strategies to optimize opioid utilization in the acute care and ambulatory settings.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of key opioid stewardship interventions.
