High Reliability and Safety Culture Series - Supporting caregivers experiencing stress

October 20, 2020

This program will present three innovative approaches to addressing the chronic stress experienced by hospital caregivers during the Covid-19 pandemic and related personal wellbeing and patient safety concerns. This first approach discusses a peer response program in the form of emotional support and psychological first aid provided to caregivers in an effort mitigate the negative effects of stress and burnout. The second approach is the use of mental health professionals to proactively round on patient care units to deliver timely and effective emotional support to clinicians while on duty. The third approach describes several leadership-driven approaches to assessing staff wellbeing through conducting surveys and implementing enhanced communication strategies from the organization’s senior leaders. Participants in this program will gain better understanding of how similar approaches can be instituted within their own organizations and the potential impact these initiatives can have on staff wellbeing.
