2026 Impact - T32 - Turning the Tide on Mortality: Practical Approaches That Work - On Demand
When mortality performance lags, meaningful change can be produced through targeted, service line-driven strategies. At UCHealth, a neuroscience-focused initiative applied Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) methodology; structured documentation; and care pathway adjustments to improve observed-to-expected mortality. At Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, a comprehensive oncology effort combined 100% mortality review, expanded critical care, a sepsis focus and enhanced palliative care to move from bottom- to top-quartile performance. These experiences highlight how disciplined review processes, documentation accuracy and multidisciplinary alignment can shift mortality outcomes over time.
