2026 Impact - T53 - Pathway to Excellence: A Systemwide Approach to Mortality Improvement - On Demand
Emory Healthcare, a large academic and community health system, launched “Pathway to Excellence: A Systemwide Journey to Mortality Reduction and Safer Care,” to address persistent variation in mortality outcomes and access to end-of-life care. Using a unified operating model that integrated enterprise governance, Vizient analytics, standardized electronic health record documentation (smart phrases) and a systemwide hospice scatter bed (“Hospice Anywhere”) program, Emory aligned observed and expected mortality improvement efforts. Within nine months, the initiative achieved a 45.7% improvement in the Vizient observed-to-expected mortality index (0.92 to 0.50) across six hospitals, alongside a marked expansion in inpatient hospice utilization.
