Updates in the Management of Atrial Fibrillation
The purpose of this activity is to provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with the most recent guideline updates on atrial fibrillation. By reviewing the 2023 ACC/AHA guidelines and relevant primary literature, the audience will refresh their knowledge of AF background, treatment options, and note key differences from previous guidelines. Older terms such as “valvular AF” are being phased out and pharmacists need to be familiar with the new terminology. In addition to CHA2DS2-VASc, 2 other validated risk models can be used to calculate stroke risk in AF. Rhythm control and catheter ablation has received guideline recommendations in certain populations. Finally, there are new recommendations for antiplatelet and anticoagulation use in AF and other comorbidities. Pharmacists will need to stay updated to implement the new evidence in their practice.
