Update in HIV-Related Therapies and Important Medication Considerations

This activity will provide pharmacists, residents, interns and technicians knowledge of HIV practice guidelines including pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV (PrEP), treatment of HIV-infected, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with an emphasis on two newly approved FDA HIV therapies. These new therapies, Apretude and Cabenuva will be reviewed in-depth allowing pharmacy personnel to learn about important drug considerations including their place in therapy, efficacy, administration technique, dosing regimen, side effects profile, drug-drug interactions and more. This presentation will further advance the understanding and clinical capabilities of pharmacy personnel in HIV management, in order to provide patients with the best health care possible.

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. Apply current HIV guideline recommendations for the pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of HIV in a case-based scenario.
  2. Evaluate the literature on the recently approved therapies for the pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of HIV.
  3. Assess for any drug-drug interactions and any other important medication considerations related to Apretude and Cabenuva.

Pharmacy technician learning objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacy technicians should be able to:

  1. Recognize brand and generic names of new HIV treatment and prevention options.
