Steroids in Severe Pneumonia: Friend or Foe
This activity will include a review of the latest guidelines and studies looking at whether or not we should routinely be using corticosteroids as adjunct therapy for patients admitted with severe community acquired pneumonia. This activity will include an interactive portion with review questions asked throughout the presentation to engage the audience and assess their ability to apply the content.

At the conclusion of this activity, Pharmacists should be able to:
- Review how community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is diagnosed and differentiated from other respiratory illnesses
- Describe the inflammatory process of CAP and classification of commonly used steroids
- Examine the latest guidelines and recommendations for the role of steroids in severe CAP
- Evaluate the efficacy and safety of corticosteroids as adjunct therapy in severe CAP
At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacy technicians should be able to:
- Recognize the incidence and differences between community acquired pneumonia compared to other respiratory illnesses
- Identify typical doses for steroids used for CAP treatment
- Compare and contrast commonly used steroids and their role in CAP treatment
