Quality respiratory care is essential to improve oxygenation, promote ventilation, and support recovery for patients with both acute and chronic respiratory conditions. This continuing education activity provides nurses with evidence based knowledge and practical approaches to assess, manage, and evaluate patients who require respiratory support and interventions. Participants will explore the physiological principles of respiratory function, the use and maintenance of oxygen delivery systems, airway management techniques, and strategies to enhance patient safety and comfort. The program emphasizes best practices, interprofessional collaboration, and patient education to strengthen nursing competence and confidence in providing respiratory care.

Learning Objectives

 

Upon completion of this continuing education activity, participants will be able to:
 
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system as it relates to the delivery of safe and effective nursing care.
  • Identify common respiratory conditions and the nursing interventions that promote adequate oxygenation and ventilation.
  • Apply evidence-based practices for the assessment and monitoring of patients receiving oxygen therapy or other respiratory treatments.
  • Implement safe procedures for airway maintenance, suctioning, and the use of respiratory support devices.
  • Educate patients and caregivers about strategies that promote respiratory health, including breathing exercises and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapists and other members of the health care team to optimize patient outcomes and prevent complications.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on maintaining adequate hydration and understanding how medications may affect fluid balance.
  • Collaborate with the health care team to develop and carry out individualized care plans that address both medication and hydration needs.
