Post Steroids Era: What's Next for Treatment of Chronic GVHD after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

This CE will review the updates in steroid refractory cGVHD treatment. It will cover background information on cGVHD that includes pathophysiology, epidemiology, risk factors, and diagnosis of the disease. Then the first line treatment of cGVHD will be reviewed. Next the historical treatment of steroid refractory, second line treatment of cGVHD will be reviewed to put the emerging therapies into perspective. The last portion of the CE will cover the emerging therapies recently FDA approved to treat steroid refractory cGVHD as well as clinical pearls and drug information related to their use.

  • Describe chronic Graft vs Host Disease characteristics and pathophysiology following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Explain the treatment of chronic graft versus host disease
  • Explore the historical treatment of steroid-refractory disease
  • Examine the use of novel agents for steroid refractory chronic graft vs host disease

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacy technicians should be able to:  

  • Recognize the brand and generic names as well as dosage forms of novel agents utilized in cGVHD
