NSBB in Decompensated Cirrhosis: Balancing Benefits and Risks in Ascites Management

This activity is designed to educate the audience and bring awareness towards the benefits and risks of non-selective beta-blockers in patients with decompensated cirrhosis and ascites. The participants will be informed of emerging literature and the key results of these important studies that may impact which non-selective beta-blocker should be initiated in practice, if at all, along with critical safety considerations. With this analysis, the participants will discuss of differing viewpoints of NSBBs in these patients, while reviewing the key points of this analysis.

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. Review the pathophysiology, etiology, and clinical manifestations of decompensated cirrhosis, particularly ascites and refractory ascites.
  2. Analyze the role of non-selective beta blockers as a therapeutic option in patients with established decompensated cirrhosis.
  3. Evaluate the current literature on the efficacy and safety of non-selective beta blockers in the management of decompensated cirrhosis with ascites.
  4. Discuss the potential adverse effects and risks associated with using non-selective beta-blockers in decompensated cirrhosis.

  1. Recognize the potential consequences and side effects of non-selective beta-blockers in the context of decompensated cirrhosis.
