Management of Drug Shortages in Hospitals and Health Systems
This activity will provide pharmacy leaders, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy technicians with information to understand why drug shortages occur and its impacts on the health systems. With drug shortage issues becoming more frequent, it is pertinent for the individuals within the pharmacy department to be aware of the various causes of drug shortages and issues that may arise as a result, particularly as they relate to medication safety. While there are numerous resources and strategies already available to mitigate the effects of drug shortages, clinician must work with their health care team and patients to determine the best options when faced with drug shortages. The key to success in managing drug shortages will be found in gathering in the information to understand drug shortages, teamwork to assess options, and communication with providers, patients, and administrators.
