ISMP Medication Safety Alert! Action Agenda Update 2023

Participants in this program will learn how they can use this timely information to immediately address issues in their organization in support a robust medication safety program. ISMP faculty reviews priority findings and recommendations based on reports submitted to ISMP that appeared in ISMP Medication Safety Alert! Acute Care edition newsletters from October 2022 through March 2023. ISMP faculty will describe cases along with the cause of these often-preventable medication safety issues and provide meaningful recommendations for early detection as proven prevention strategies. Participants in this program will learn how they can use this timely information to identify and immediately address issues in their organization in support a robust medication safety program.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and all other healthcare professionals.

Overall learning objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall three error/hazard examples that have been reported to the ISMP Medication Safety Error Reporting Program (ISMP MERP) during the second quarter of 2022.
  • Describe how external medication safety information can be used regularly to support improved as part of a robust medication safety program.
  • Discuss strategies to prevent errors when preparing and administering medications via enteral feeding tubes.
  • Determine three strategies that can be used to prevent drug diversion.
