This activity will review and support learners as the navigate the current landscape of pediatric vaccines, including navigating conflicting recommendations, understanding the clinical data driving recommendations, and enforcing language to engage patients in their care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, pharmacists should be able to:  

  • Compare current CDC and AAP pediatric immunization schedules, highlighting key differences and categorization (routine, high-risk, shared clinical decision-making).
  • Evaluate the clinical evidence and public health rationale cited by CDC and pediatric organizations regarding recent vaccine schedule changes.
  • Identify vaccines most impacted by recent policy changes and implications for pediatric patients.
  • Apply current guidance to develop appropriate, patient-specific immunization recommendations for children and adolescents, including catch-up and high-risk scenarios.
  • Develop effective protocols for communication with patients and caregivers about conflicting vaccine recommendations using evidence-based counseling strategies.
