From Bleed to Squeeze: Navigating Subarachnoid Vasospasm

This learning activity will ensure the audience understands subarachnoid vasospasm by explaining the etiology and types of subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH), the pathophysiology of aneurysmal SAH, and potential complications that can occur, specifically vasospasms. The presentation will then further assess the current literature regarding empiric therapy and acute treatment of vasospasms and review clinical pearls of commonly used treatment modalities. This will provide a general understanding for clinical and operational pharmacy staff to apply if they encounter any related orders.

  1. Examine the background of the different types of subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  2. Differentiate between empiric therapy used before vasospasm occurs and the acute treatment and management when vasospasms is actively occurring.

  4. Provide recommendations regarding administration and monitoring parameters of subarachnoid vasospasm treatment.

  1. Explain proper administration and storage of nimodipine .
  2. Identify the different pharmacologic therapies and routes of administration used for empiric therapy and treatment of subarachnoid vasospasm .
