2026 Impact - W93 - Right Patient, Right Setting: Aligning ED Capacity, Placement and Flow - On Demand
Health systems are increasingly challenged to manage capacity constraints while ensuring patients receive care in the right setting. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania uses a real-time emergency department (ED) pressure score to guide physician-led, capacity-based transfers across campuses, reducing ad hoc decisions and improving transfer yield. Complementing this, an ED-based COMPASS (Complex Placement and Support Services) program at UAB Medicine proactively identifies patients with complex disposition needs and coordinates placement or community support upstream, avoiding unnecessary admissions. These models demonstrate how early, data-informed decision-making and interdisciplinary coordination can reduce boarding, improve access and better align care with patient needs. Explore scalable approaches to manage capacity and complexity by attending this panel discussion.
