2026 Impact - W83 - Go With the Flow: Optimizing Academic Emergency Department Treatment Completion - On Demand
This interprofessional quality improvement project leveraged high-reliability organization principles within a high-acuity, trauma-level academic medical center emergency department (ED) to prevent patient harm and reduce left before treatment complete (LBTC) rates. By standardizing safety-driven processes across the care continuum — from triage through discharge — the initiative enhanced throughput efficiency while ensuring every patient received safe and complete care. Interprofessional nursing collaboration, supported by multidisciplinary engagement with physicians and operations leaders, drove the design and implementation of reliable workflows that increased visibility of high-risk patients and mitigated the LBTC metric.
