2026 Impact - T55 - Decreasing Care Variation: A Dashboard-Driven Approach to Performance Improvement - On Demand
Tufts Medical Center developed a variation in care dashboard, integrating patient demographics and the Vizient Vulnerability Index to identify and address inequities in clinical outcomes. Use of this tool revealed disproportionately high central line-associated bloodstream infection rates among non-English-speaking patients when compared to the percentage of non-English speaking patients with central lines, prompting a targeted performance improvement initiative. Interventions included translating evidence-based central line and chlorhexidine gluconate bathing education materials, enabling unit-level stratified data review, and incorporating language barriers into root cause analyses. This data-driven approach supports frontline accountability, reduces unwarranted variation in care and advances high-quality outcomes for all patients.
