2026 Impact - T35 - Beyond Boarding: Rethinking Behavioral Health Care in the ED - On Demand
As behavioral health demand rises, health systems are rethinking how care is delivered and coordinated in the emergency setting. At University of Kentucky HealthCare, the EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatry Assessment, Treatment and Healing) model provides rapid, therapeutic crisis care outside the emergency department (ED), reducing restraints, revisits and length of stay (LOS) while improving patient experience. Complementing this approach, Loma Linda University Health applied psychiatric-specific metrics and structured, multidisciplinary reviews to improve behavioral health throughput, reduce variability and support earlier engagement. See how these models highlight redesigned care environments and data-driven collaboration to improve access, efficiency and outcomes.
