Updates in the Treatment of Hyperkalemia

New Orleans, LA US
November 13, 2019
Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte abnormality in which patients may present with signs and symptoms including weakness, chest pain, numbness or having tingling sensations, or even leading to life threatening cardiac arrythmias in certain patients. As the population of patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and diabetes increases over the years, there has also been an increase in the number of hyperkalemia related hospitalizations and deaths. Current treatment regimens include IV insulin/dextrose, IV sodium bicarbonate, inhaled albuterol, loop diuretics, and sodium polystyrene sulfonate. However, with these regimens, there aren’t effective outpatient hyperkalemia treatment options. Recently, patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate have been introduced as oral treatment options for hyperkalemia. This presentation will introduce these pharmacotherapy agents and provide up to date literature regarding their usage in hyperkalemic patients. Finally, the presentation will conclude with patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate’s place in practice.
