Pediatric Pharmacy Pearls

The purpose of this activity is to provide pediatric-focused education for pharmacists designed to increase knowledge and improve patient care skills.
The first pearl will provide a brief introduction to pediatric oncology pharmacy through review of pediatric-specific calculations for chemotherapy orders, monitoring parameters for organ systems affected by commonly administered pediatric chemotherapy, and management strategies for chemotherapy-associated complications.
The second pearl will evaluate the available literature and discuss a stepwise approach to managing patients with autonomic storming, also known as paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH), in both the acute and chronic phases.

  1. Identify pediatric-specific calculations to evaluate chemotherapy orders

  3. Describe management strategies for common chemotherapy-associated complications in pediatric patients
  4. Identify the symptoms associated with autonomic dysfunction
  5. Compare and contrast the available therapeutic options for autonomic storming management
  6. Design an appropriate treatment plan for patients based on the available literature for autonomic storming management
