Facilitating the Inevitable: The Role of Supervised Injection Facilities
This presentation is intended to inform the inpatient and ambulatory pharmacists at ChristianaCare on the role of supervised injection facilities (SIF). It will discuss the current state of the opioid epidemic and the key public health areas of interest including overdose morbidity and mortality, viral transmission and bacterial infections, and healthcare resource burden. Legal and ethical barriers to SIF implementation will be addressed, presenting the arguments of supporters and opponents. Pharmacist will receive a review of the data on public health impact from SIF experiences in other countries. By the end of this presentation, pharmacist will be well informed on the evidence of harm reduction from SIF and future direction in the U.S.
