Concomitant Diabetes and Heart Disease? Have no Fear! A Comparative Review of GLP-1 Agonists vs. SGLT2 inhibitors in Cardiovascular Benefits

Slidell, LA US
April 29, 2020

All new medications for type 2 diabetes since 2008 were mandated by the FDA to undergo long-term cardiovascular outcome trials due to safety. During these trials, cardiovascular benefit was found with SGLT inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists which led to new indications for these medications. Reviewing these new medications with seasoned pharmacists and technicians will provide a baseline of these medications. The indications are a great importance to Slidell Memorial Hospital’s patients due to the majority of them being cardiac patients. Due to this, our pharmacists and technicians should understand how these medications work and when they are recommended.
