2026 Impact - T46 - Early Payer Status Review To Prevent Postoperative Denials - On Demand
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center implemented a novel, postanesthesia care unit (PACU)-based case manager role to ensure accurate postoperative admission bedding status at the time of hospital admission. Incorrect status placement resulted in insurance denials and underbilling despite appropriate preauthorization. Through real-time review of postoperative admissions and direct integration into surgical workflows, the PACU case manager proactively corrected admission status errors in collaboration with the surgeon and case management medical director. In initial piloting across two months of limited surgical lines, the case manager identified over $1.1 million at risk in cases where status changes were corrected. This is a must-see for administrators exploring prospective options to prevent payer denials.
